Three lawyers, one office on Quarrier Street

Each claim has one lawyer from start to finish. Our intake coordinator answers the phone, and volunteer lawyers help with hearings when the calendar fills.

  • Winifred Wetzel, her hair pulled back, in a dark suit and white shirt, seated against a dark backdrop

    Winifred Wetzel

    Director and staff attorney

Winifred started the clinic and handles Social Security hearings, especially for people over 50.

  • Verena Cottrill, with long dark hair, a dark blazer and a gray sweater, seated against a dark backdrop

    Verena Cottrill

    Staff attorney, veterans’ claims

Verena served in the Army before law school and takes the clinic’s VA claims and Board appeals.

  • Jasper Tuckwiller, in glasses, a dark suit and tie, adjusting his cuff against a dark backdrop

    Jasper Tuckwiller

    Staff attorney, SSI and appeals

Jasper takes SSI claims for adults and children, overpayment appeals and the clinic’s federal court cases.

Who else keeps the clinic running

Our intake coordinator takes the first call on every claim and keeps track of every deadline. A paralegal requests records and follows up until they arrive.

A small panel of volunteer lawyers from private firms in Charleston and Huntington takes hearings when we have more than we can cover, with one of us beside them the first time.
