How it works

What happens between the call and the decision

A claim takes months, sometimes more than a year. This is what happens in that time and who does what.

  1. 01

Step 1: Twenty minutes on the phone

Our intake coordinator asks about your claim, your income and the date on any letter. It takes about twenty minutes.

  2. 02

Step 2: Sitting down with a lawyer

At our office, by phone or at a library near you. Bring every letter you’ve had and a list of your doctors.

  3. 03

Step 3: A letter saying we’ll take it

If we take the claim, we say so in writing and file the form that lets us speak to the agency for you.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Records

We request your medical records and pay for them. This is the slowest part and the most important.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Filing or appealing

We file what the claim needs, from the first application to a brief for the Appeals Council.

  6. 06

Step 6: The decision, read with you

We explain the decision, check the figures, and tell you what’s next if it’s not what you hoped.

Three things only you can do

Three things make the difference in nearly every claim. None of them needs a lawyer, and all of them help us.

  • Open every letter, and send us a photo of it

  • Keep your appointments, and tell us about new ones

  • Write down how your days go, in your own words

The first call is the easy part

It’s free, and it doesn’t commit you to anything.
