Verena Cottrill

Staff attorney, veterans’ claims

Verena served in the Army as a medic before law school, and she takes the clinic’s veterans’ claims.

Verena handles first claims, increases and appeals to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. She’s accredited by the VA to represent veterans, which every lawyer who helps with a VA claim has to be. She reads every C&P exam report line by line, because that’s where most VA claims are won or lost.

How Verena came to this work

Verena spent four years as an Army medic and came home to a family where three people had VA claims and nobody understood the letters. She went to law school to read them.

She keeps her own DD-214 in her desk drawer, mostly to show veterans what to look for on theirs.
